10 Days Shira Classic Route

The 10-day Shira Classic Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek starting at Shira Gate (11,500 ft), offering a remote and scenic approach but with greater acclimatization challenges compared to other routes.

🌍 Overview of the Shira Route

  • Starting Point: Shira Gate at 11,500 ft (3,500 m). Unlike other routes, climbers are driven past the rainforest zone, beginning directly on the Shira Plateau.
  • Duration: 10 days, 9 nights.
  • Difficulty: Considered challenging due to the immediate altitude exposure. Best for trekkers with prior acclimatization experience.
  • Scenery: Remote, dramatic landscapes including moorlands, alpine desert, and views of Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field.
  • Descent: Down the Mweka Route on the southeast side.

🥾 Typical 10-Day Itinerary

Here’s a breakdown of the classic 10-day Shira Route:

🏔️ 10-Day Shira Classic Route Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
You arrive in Tanzania and settle into your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. This day is for rest, briefing, and a thorough gear check before the climb begins.

Day 2: Drive to Shira Gate and Trek to Simba Camp
The adventure starts with a drive to Shira Gate at 3,500 meters. Unlike other routes, you skip the rainforest zone and begin directly on the Shira Plateau. A short trek leads you to Simba Camp at 3,600 meters, where you spend your first night on the mountain.

Day 3: Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp
A gentle trek across the plateau brings you to Shira 2 Camp at 3,850 meters. The wide-open views of Kilimanjaro’s summit and surrounding plains make this day particularly scenic.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower, then down to Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters. The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering dramatic views. You continue to Karanga Camp at 4,050 meters, a smaller camp nestled in the alpine desert.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A steady climb brings you to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters, the base camp for your summit attempt. The landscape here is stark and lunar-like, with anticipation building for the final push.

Day 7: Summit Day — Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
At midnight, you begin the ascent to the summit. Passing Stella Point, you reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters just as the sun rises, revealing glaciers and sweeping views across Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters for a well-earned rest.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
A gentle descent through the forest brings you to Mweka Gate at 1,640 meters. Here you exit the park and return to Moshi, where a hot shower and comfortable bed await.

Day 9: Buffer or Rest Day
This day can be used for recovery, cultural exploration in Moshi or Arusha, or as a contingency in case of delays on the mountain.

Day 10: Departure
Your journey concludes with a transfer to the airport or onward safari, carrying memories of Kilimanjaro’s summit and the dramatic Shira Plateau.

🌟 Why Choose the Shira Route

The Shira Classic Route is remote and scenic, offering dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds. However, it begins at high altitude, which makes acclimatization more challenging compared to the Lemosho Route. The 10-day itinerary maximizes your chances of success by building in extra time for rest and adjustment.

⚠️ Key Considerations

  • Altitude Risk: Starting at 11,500 ft means climbers skip gradual acclimatization through the rainforest zone. This increases the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Cost: More expensive than other routes due to transport logistics to Shira Gate.
  • Comparison: The Shira Route merges with the Lemosho Route later on, but Lemosho is generally preferred because it allows a gentler acclimatization start.

âś… Best For

  • Experienced trekkers who have already acclimatized on other climbs.
  • Those seeking a remote, less crowded, and scenic route.
  • Climbers who want a longer trek (10 days) for better summit success chances despite the high starting altitude.
