4 Days Mt. Meru Route

🏔️ 4-Day Mount Meru Trek Itinerary

4-day Mount Meru trekking itinerary via the Momella Route, the only official trail to the summit. It balances acclimatization, wildlife encounters, and dramatic scenery, culminating at Socialist Peak (4,566 m), the second-highest mountain in Tanzania.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Your adventure begins at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. The trail winds through savannah and lush montane forest, where giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys are often seen grazing or leaping through the trees. With a ranger escort for safety, you ascend steadily until reaching Miriakamba Hut at 2,500 meters. This first evening offers a gentle introduction to the mountain, with the sounds of the forest surrounding you.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
The second day is steeper, climbing through dense forest and giant heather. As you gain altitude, the views open up, and Mount Kilimanjaro often appears on the horizon. By afternoon, you arrive at Saddle Hut at 3,570 meters. To aid acclimatization, many trekkers take a short hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters), a rewarding side peak with sweeping panoramas. The night at Saddle Hut is spent preparing for the summit push.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak, then back to Miriakamba Hut
Summit day begins in the dark, with a midnight departure. The trail climbs past Rhino Point (3,800 meters) and Cobra Point (4,350 meters), where the jagged crater walls glow faintly in the moonlight. By dawn, you reach Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters, just as the sun rises over Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valley. After celebrating at the summit, you descend all the way back to Miriakamba Hut, a long but exhilarating day that combines challenge with unforgettable views.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
The final descent is gentle, winding back through forest and grassland. Wildlife sightings are common, and the trek feels more like a walking safari than a mountain climb. By midday, you arrive at Momella Gate, where your vehicle awaits to return you to Arusha or Moshi.

🌟 Why This Trek Stands Out

Mount Meru offers a compact but rich experience: wildlife encounters, volcanic scenery, and a rewarding summit, all within four days. It’s often chosen as a warm-up for Kilimanjaro, but it’s equally fulfilling as a standalone climb. The ranger-guided journey ensures safety while adding a sense of adventure, and the huts provide simple but comfortable shelter along the way.

🌟 Key Features of the Trek

  • Wildlife-rich approach: Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru’s lower slopes are inside Arusha National Park, so trekkers often see giraffes, zebras, and buffalo.
  • Acclimatization benefit: Many climbers use Meru as a warm-up for Kilimanjaro, since it offers altitude exposure without extreme elevation.
  • Scenic diversity: From lush rainforest to alpine desert, plus dramatic crater views and Kilimanjaro rising in the distance.
  • Ranger-guided: All treks require an armed ranger due to wildlife presence.

🧭 Practical Notes

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging; summit day is long (10–12 hours).
  • Best season: June–February (clear skies), though trekking is possible year-round.
  • Accommodation: Simple mountain huts (Miriakamba and Saddle Hut).
  • Summit success rate: High, thanks to gradual acclimatization and shorter duration compared to Kilimanjaro.

In short: The 4-day Mount Meru trek is a compact adventure—wildlife, volcanic scenery, and a rewarding summit—all within a manageable timeframe. It’s perfect for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro or as a standalone climb.
