7-day Lemosho Route itinerary — one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and popular treks. The Lemosho Route begins on the western side of the mountain, offering lush rainforest, sweeping views, and excellent acclimatization.
🏔️ 7-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)
Your trek begins at Lemosho Gate (2,100 m), where you enter the rainforest. The trail is alive with monkeys, birds, and dense vegetation. After 3–4 hours of hiking, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m), nestled beneath towering trees.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp
The trail climbs out of the forest into moorland, crossing the Shira Plateau. Wide-open views of Kilimanjaro’s summit dominate the horizon. By evening, you reach Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m), a dramatic site with sweeping vistas.
Day 3: Shira 2 to Lava Tower, then down to Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950 m). The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering thrilling views. You continue to Karanga Camp (4,050 m), a smaller camp set in the alpine desert.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A steady climb leads to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The landscape here is stark and lunar-like, with anticipation building for the final push.
Day 6: Summit Day — Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
At midnight, you begin the ascent to the summit. Passing Stella Point, you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise, greeted by glaciers and sweeping views across Africa. After celebrating, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-earned rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
A gentle descent through the forest brings you to Mweka Gate (1,640 m). Here you collect your summit certificate before returning to Moshi or Arusha.
