7-day Machame Route itinerary — one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular and scenic treks. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is more challenging than Marangu but offers dramatic landscapes, excellent acclimatization, and a high summit success rate.
🏔️ 7-Day Machame Route Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your trek begins at Machame Gate (1,800 m). The trail winds through lush rainforest, alive with monkeys and exotic birds. After 5–7 hours of hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp (3,000 m), where the forest gives way to moorland.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
The trail climbs steeply out of the forest into open moorland. You cross ridges and valleys before reaching Shira Camp (3,850 m), set on a high plateau with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower, then down to Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950 m). The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering thrilling views. After crossing ridges and valleys, you reach Karanga Camp (4,050 m), a smaller camp nestled in the alpine desert.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A steady climb leads to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The landscape here is stark and lunar-like, with anticipation building for the final push.
Day 6: Summit Day — Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
At midnight, you begin the ascent to the summit. Passing Stella Point, you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise, greeted by glaciers and sweeping views across Africa. After celebrating, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-earned rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
A gentle descent through the forest brings you to Mweka Gate (1,640 m). Here you collect your summit certificate before returning to Moshi or Arusha.
