The 6-day Marangu Route is essentially the extended version of the classic “Coca-Cola Route.” The extra day is added at Horombo Hut, giving trekkers more time to acclimatize. This small adjustment makes a big difference in summit success rates, while still offering the comfort of hut accommodations throughout.
🏔️ 6-Day Marangu Route Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your journey begins at Marangu Gate (1,860 m). The trail leads through lush rainforest alive with monkeys and tropical birds. After 4–5 hours of trekking, you arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700 m), where you spend the night in simple but cozy cabins.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leaving the forest behind, you ascend into heath and moorland. The views open up dramatically, with Mawenzi and Kibo peaks rising ahead. After 6–8 hours of hiking, you reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m), a lively camp where climbers gather.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
This is the key difference from the 5-day itinerary. You spend an extra night at Horombo Hut, taking a short acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi or Zebra Rocks. This day allows your body to adjust to altitude, greatly improving your chances of reaching the summit.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Crossing the alpine desert, you trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail is long but gradual, leading to Kibo Hut (4,700 m), your base camp before the summit push.
Day 5: Summit Day — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut
At midnight, you begin the final ascent. The climb is steep and determined, passing Gilman’s Point and Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise. After celebrating at the summit, you descend all the way back to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
The final descent retraces your steps through moorland and rainforest. At Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi or Arusha.
🌟 Why Choose the 6-Day Version
- Better acclimatization: The extra day at Horombo Hut significantly increases summit success rates.
- Comfortable huts: Dormitory-style cabins with mattresses, dining halls, and solar lighting.
- Classic heritage: The oldest and most established route on Kilimanjaro.
- Balanced challenge: Shorter than other routes but safer than the 5-day option.
This 6-day itinerary is ideal for trekkers who want the comfort of huts and a higher chance of summit success, without committing to the longer 7–8 day camping routes.
